Bringing Pets To Hawaiʻi? Start Earlier Than You Think

If Hawaiʻi is part of your move and you have a dog or cat, this is one detail you don’t want to leave until the last minute.

Because Hawaiʻi is rabies-free, the state has strict import requirements. That usually means a microchip, up-to-date rabies vaccinations, a FAVN rabies antibody test, health paperwork, fees, and very specific timing. There are waiting periods built into the process, which is where most families get caught off guard.

One important thing to know: emotional support animals do not bypass quarantine requirements. Service dogs still have to meet all state health and rabies rules as well.

I’m not sharing this to make the move feel more complicated. I’m sharing it because this is one of those details that’s manageable early – and stressful if delayed.

Before flights are booked, double-check the state’s checklist, confirm your airport arrival plans, and make sure your paperwork timeline works backward from your move date.

It’s much easier to feel prepared than rushed when it comes to this part.
